So, based on my glowing recommendations, you have decided to take the plunge, and actually buy an Nvidia graphics card. Of course, Nvidia has a rather bewildering variety of cards for sale, and while I am very happy with my Nvidia GeForce GTX 260, and it is a very good Nvidia card, should you decide to buy one, here are some more for you to consider. Obviously, which Nvidia card you buy will depend on your own needs and budget.

This is the next Nvidia card that I want to buy myself, so I am including it here, in case anybody is feeling generous. It runs at about twice the speed of my current card, and it includes all the other features that it has. It allows some very smooth and precise gaming as well. I think you should buy this Nvidia card if you are a gamer on a bit of a budget, but you still want to enjoy all the latest games to their fullest.

This is a card that I dream about, but it costs almost 3000 Dollars, and it is a bit outside my price range. It was actually designed for use in professional animation and rendering, but I think that gaming on it would be an amazing experience. Buy this Nvidia card if you are a serious professional that uses 3D in their work, or just if you are a dedicated gamer with a ton of money. I can honestly say that this is the top (and most expensive) Nvidia card at the moment. Soon, i hope to be rich enough to get one of those!

Nvidia was founded in January 1993 by Jen-Hsun Huang,  Curtis Priem and Chris Malachowsky. At the time, the multimedia landscape was a lot different to what it is now. CD-ROMS and Sound Cards have just started growing in popularity, and full motion video was state of the art.

Two years after founding the company, they launched their first graphics accelerator: the NV1 and STG2000 cards. With an impressive 4Mb of RAM, they were still the first dedicated graphics cards. Despite being revolutionary for its time, the NV1 was nearly the end of the Nvidia company, since soon after it was released, Microsoft settled on using polygons as a standard for 3D Graphics, and the card was engineered in a different way. People did not exactly rush out to buy an Nvidia graphics card that did not work with Microsoft’s products.

The Original NV1 Nvidia Card

Luckily for us, this failure did not deter Nvidia, and they made drastic changes to their strategy. The decided to support standard APIs, and started using a six month development cycle, meaning that they would release a new nvidia graphics card every six months.

In 1997, Nvidia Released the RIVA 128, its first real success. It was a low cost graphics card that supported the standards of the time, and rapidly rose in popularity. Six months later, in February 1998, they released its successor, the RIVA 128ZX.

At the time, the Graphics Card market was dominated by 3Dfx, with its Voodoo line of graphics cards. While a lot of people did buy the new nvidia cards, it was only in 1999, with the release of the NVIDIA TNT2, that Nvidia really started pushing ahead of 3dfx.

In the fall of 1999, we saw the release of the Nvidia Geforce, the first in their long line of best-selling graphics cards. It was miles ahead of anything else available at the time. This was also around where I first heard of NVidia. I really wanted to buy an Nvidia Geforce, but I was just a poor student at the time. Thanks to the Geforce, Nvidia managed to become the video card to be used in the XBox.

At the end of 2000, the battle between 3dfx and Nvidia ended, with Nvidia purchasing all of 3dfx’ intellectual property and assets as the company dissolved.

Soon after that, Nvidia encountered a new competitor, as one of the lesser know 3d graphics companies at the time rose in prominence: ATI. Their rivalry continues to this day, and check just about any gaming forum, and you are bound to find at least one thread along the lines of “should I buy Nvidia, or should I buy ATI.”

I guess you all know which side I fall on in that debate!

Well, this is the first time I buy an Nvidia card, but it will not be the last. Here is a picture for you:

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 260

This card has an impressive GPU, with 192 cores, a 1.2 GHz clock, and 896Mb of Memory. Its resolution can go up to 2048×1536, although my monitor dies not support that, so I am unable to test it to it full potential, but it loks absolutely amazing even at a lower resolution.

It does not support DirectX 11 out of the box, but at this time I am not aware of any games that take full advantage of it anyway, so it does not bother me for now. The next Nvidia card I buy, I will make sure that it does support DirectX 11, just so that I can really say that I have the best.

The card is Nvidia 3D Vision ready according to the documentation. I am not sure if my monitor can cope with it though, and either way, I still do not have the glasses. This is something that I will definitely keep in mind, since I would dearly love to check it out. I really think that the future is in 3D, although at this time it is still very gimmicky.

Looking at the photo above, the card even looks gorgeous, which is a bit wasted, since it is sitting inside the casing, anyway. Perhaps I should buy an Nvidia casing to go with it?

Anyway, this is my current Nvidia card. The next one I buy will be Nvidia as well, since I have not seen ATI offering anything of comparable value, and the rest are not even worth discussing.
